Looks like everyone missed the excitement of Boasters League
night and were overly eager to get back into the swing of things. It was a
reasonably healthy turnout for a round 1 in January, the courts were utilized nonstop
most of the evening, maybe not with league matches at all times but plenty of pick-up
games. At one point, there was a game of cut-throat happening with at least 6
people on court… crowded floor… do we need more courts?
The league teams were jumbled around for the second half,
and as usual, as is customary at this time of the (extended) “Festivus for the
Rest-of-Us” celebration the airing of grievances comes my way. Not whether I
have moved people up or down, but more that I bumped them to another team. It’s
all in good jest of course, but I don’t swap people off teams unless it’s
necessary and until I can change the laws of mathematics, it will continue to
be unavoidable.
Picking up where they left off in the first half, the Butter Nutz are on top of the
standings. They did pick up the most bonus points last night (13) which naturally
helped and they won all but one match that was played so far. That being said,
it is only round 1, the Wardogs are
in 8th place but only 9 points back so it is way too early to cherry
pick any trends.
Plenty of competitive squash last night… JC Tibbitts (Butter Nutz) had a strong outing against Tom MacEachern (Foss Nation),
a player that he usually struggles against, winning about 33% of the time. His
2-1 win here could be attributed to a couple of things however… either he
actually outplayed him and deserved the win… or, since he had to borrow his
clothing for the match from Ryan Covell,
somehow the Covell squash ‘vibes’ seeped into JC and he was able to elevate
himself to the next level… or the ‘aroma’ emanating from the clothing was
making it next to impossible for Tom to breathe and therefore not able to run
properly. The jury is out on that.
Special shout out to Tony
Sorgi (Butter Nutz). Tony is coming
back from an Achilles tendon tear and this was his first league match since. He
was taking on the experienced Jim Miller
(Foss Nation). You don’t want to set
the ball up for Jim, he will put it away. And he made Tony work and test out
his mobility. Breathing heavily, Tony was very pleased for his 2-1 win, he has
passed the first hurdle with his comeback!
Other close results include Matt Turnbull (Nick at Night)
fending off the challenge from Jim
Palmer (Mongoose) with a 2-1
victory; Jeff Jorge (Nick at Night) having his fitness
tested from Andrew Peleman (Mongoose) but just managing to fall
over the finish line 2-1; and Zac MacVoy
(On the Rocks) hustling a little too
much for John Roarty (Vivio’s) as he starts off his second
half with a 2-1 win.
Hopefully the enthusiasm continues for the next couple of
months for the league, it would be great if participation could at least match
(preferably exceed!) what we saw last night. What else could be matched? Maybe John Mann’s attempt eating the most
chicken wings in one sitting? Or matching the most unlikely of upsets on the
doubles court as we saw last night in the doubles league. (Stefan and Vikram… how… what… ummm….huh??). Will Patrick Petz’ shirt ever match his
shorts? Either way, try as best you can to get your match in next week!
