ACTION A PLENTY

Boasters League round 2~~

Nothing more pleasing than seeing the squash courts busy all evening during a league night. Well, almost nothing… I have to say that it is probably more gratifying when the DAC wins the Farris Cup against the BAC (ouch!)… or when the final match is completed on that Sunday afternoon of the DAC Classic weekend… or when my wife forgets to add the broccoli into my dinner (although she has finally taken down the Christmas tree)… but seeing a full slate of squash court usage definitely is up there. It’s just the way it should be every Wednesday. I am sure everybody who was here would think the same thing: It’s a wonderful social atmosphere.

The best performing teams this week were Mongoose (once again!) and Winky-Dinks with both picking up 37 points. Hence, Mongoose maintain top billing and Winky-Dinks jump up 2 spots to second. The biggest drop came from Wardogs. They picked up a second worst 19 points only (Nick at Night only scored 18) and dropped three places to 5th. Bonus points were pretty healthy last night too, only 2 teams didn’t score double figures in that column.

Match of the night must go to John Perkins (Nicker Ballers) and Ian Edwards (Mongoose). Ian gave me a little of a hard time in the first half of the season since I had him ranked 6 on his team and he truly believed he should have been higher. Ian had a point, he proved himself and ended up 7 and 1 for the half, so I bumped him up to the 5 spot. Yesterday was his first test for the second half. The match couldn’t have been closer. Literally. All three games went 15-14. John won it 2-1. Of course, now Ian has a losing record for the half, so I told him I might push him back to the number 6 spot unless he picks himself up somewhat. I may have to talk to his coach.

Ryan Covell (Nicker Ballers) and Jason Currie (Mongoose) had what I thought was a curious contest. They had numerous entertaining rallies, both of them can be rather nimble around the court which makes for extended exchanges but often the point ended on either an unforced error or some poor choice of shot. If both could be a smidgeon more consistent with the end of the rallies, the quality would jump even higher. Ryan took this match 2-1.

Lori McColl (Nick at Night) continued where she left off in the first half – winning. After moving her up one spot in the league for the second half, Lori was unfazed and in fact relished the challenge no doubt as she beat Esther Thomas (Winky-Dinks) 2-1. Tom Fabbri (Vivio’s) picks up his first win of the half taking down David Zack (Butter Nutz) 2-1 – a revenge result for Tom since David cleaned him up 2-1 last time; and Rene Peleman (Butter Nutz) made his Boasters League debut last night with a 2-1 win over Will Markley (Vivio’s) making my life considerably more difficult as I now have to remember and recognize another Peleman face without trying to get the name incorrect. There are four of them in the league now. Thanks, guys. I am simply going to start to call all of you “mate”.

Let’s keep the momentum going with the Wednesday nights. I expect another bumper evening next week as it is also ‘meet the candidates’ for the DAC election… the perfect chance meet our future leaders… perfect chance to drink a few cold ones… perfect chance to play a league match or two…
