As expected, the league night was rather tranquil being the
day before the DAC Classic kicks off. A lot of people were maybe catching up on
some zzzzz’s that they no doubt will be in short supply of over the next few
days, or maybe trying to find their ‘Zen’ and get themselves into the right frame
of mind for the upcoming competition, or maybe they were simply staying away
from the keg that they won’t be avoiding from today onwards… Whatever the
reason, not a ton of action which reflected in the standings. Mongoose increased their dominant lead,
Winky-Dinks are hanging on to
second, Over Served and Nick at Night are still wallowing in
the depths of the catacombs of last place.
Foss Nation were
the ones to raise their heads above the rest this week with a league leading 32
points and jumped up 3 spots on the standings to 3rd place, just 5
points off Winky-Dinks. The team that
plummeted was Nicker Ballers. Yes,
they did have a bye week, but they only salvaged a skimpy 5 points and dropped
a rather impressive 4 spots to 7th place and currently out of
play-off contention.
One of the reasons Mongoose
continue to do well? Bonus points. Another 13 yesterday, giving them 60 for
the season. Next best is just 50. They have also played the most matches so far
– 7% more than the next best. Pretty simple formula for success.
Surprisingly, the courts were noticeably busy leading up to
league night yesterday but tapered off once the league kicked in. So not a lot
of action to pick from with the matches that were completed.
One of the hardest fought matches was Chris Langenburg (Winky-Dinks)
and Landon Lefler (Wardogs). It felt as these two were
playing a best of 7 match and not just 3 games. I watched a little, went back
to my office, entered a couple scores on Sporty, watched a little more, moseyed
on upstairs to check out the action on courts 1 and 2, talked to a few members,
took my sweet time coming back to the court area, and Chris and Landon were still
going at it. Landon took the match 2 games to 1 (maybe they were playing to 21
per game?) improving his record to 4 wins and 1 loss for the half.
Adam Whitehead (Butter Nutz) picked up his third win of
the half with a 2-1 take-down of Paul
Gormley (Nick at Night). I may
see Paul’s racquet back for a restring this week, it seems he has used up all
of the winners out of the new set of strings he purchased 2 weeks ago. I told
not to use up all of them at once.
So we have 3 rounds to play before the finals are upon us.
As you know the last 3 teams on the standings get to watch the finals as
opposed to actually playing in them, so some teams have plenty of work to do in
the next month. The deadline to get all your scores into me is Thursday March 5
(inclusive). Plus, as you all know, we lose the 2 courts upstairs due to the
construction so we will have to squeeze the finals play onto the 2 courts
downstairs – there will have to a lot of rearranging and flexibility with your
schedules to accommodate.
